WILLIAM HARVEY WELLS.
Born at Tolland, Conn., Feb. 27, 1812; educated in the academies
of Connecticut; instructor in the Teachers' Seminary at Andover,
1836 - 1847; principal of the Putnam School at Newburyport,
1848 - 1854; principal of the Westfield Normal School, 1854 - 1856;
city superintendent of the schools of Chicago, 1856 - 1863; president
of the Massachusetts Teachers' Association, 1851 and 1852; president
of the National Teachers' Association, 1864; author of text-books on
English grammar and "Graded Schools;" died at Chicago,
Jan. 21, 1885. |
